On a fine Sunday afternoon, the Atlanta Humane Society held its annual blessing of the animals. The minister blessed the animals inside the building; the rest of us waited outside under the awning. Kodi and Dori, my girl Kuvaszok, visited with the people and the dogs waiting with us, from the large brindle Akita mix to the partially paralyzed Chihuahua in his cardboard box bed.
The minister finished inside and stepped outside to join us. He began the service, reading from Genesis.
Suddenly, there was a slight creak behind us. The door had opened and a large, fuzzy creature slipped out toward us. It was the humane society’s mascot, a person dressed up as the Polka Dot Pooch.
Kodi and Dori instantly leaped to their feet barking furiously, protecting their new-found flock of friends against this surprise intruder!
The other dogs stood by silently. Kodi and Dori had to do ALL the work of protecting the group from this suspicious stranger!
I jumped to my feet, too, and pulled Kodi and Dori a little bit away from the group. They quit barking but growled intermittently at the mascot while keeping a close watch on it.
The minister finished the sermon and prayer, and said, “Amen.” Kodi barked out, “Arf! Arf!” with perfect timing, as if she was responding to the minister. And everyone laughed!

In autumn 1995, we took our Kuvasz, Kodi and Dori, to the Blessing of the Animals ceremony at the Atlanta Humane Society. In the middle of the ceremony, a person dressed in a dog costume quietly joined the group. And Kodi and Dori alerted immediately to this intrusion, as a good LGD should.
